How good is coconut oil? Has anyone tried it?

The doctor in the Pritikin website is incorrect. Virgin organic coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils you can use.

It shows that most Phd's just parrot what they are fed and don't do their own research. OR that they trust what the establishment keeps parroting in line with drug companies.

It also shows how long a lie will be believed and that we have to do our own research to find the latest and accurate information. How many other things is this guy wrong about ? And many still listen to him.

Recent research contradicts claims that coconut oil causes atherosclerosis and heart disease. In a study published in Clinical Biochemistry, 2004, researchers looked at coconut oil as a component of diet in laboratory animals (Sprague-Dawley rats). In this study, virgin coconut oil, which was obtained by wet process, had a beneficial effect in lowering total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and low density lipoproteins (LDL). The effects were uniformly beneficial. In serum and tissues, very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol levels were lowered and HDL-cholesterol was increased. The polyphenol fraction of virgin coconut oil was also found to prevent in vitro LDL-oxidation. We know that oxidized cholesterol can initiate the process of atherosclerosis鈥攖he fatty acids in coconut oil prevent this oxidation. The results in this study were interpreted as due to the biologically active polyphenol components present in the oil.

For me, when I tried cooking with it I didn't like it. I like olive oil much better. How good is coconut oil? Has anyone tried it?
trust me... i'm using it everyday... in my deep fry, my stir frying, in my chocholate cake coconut oil is my subtitute to the butter. The taste and the smell... better then cooking using the peanut oil. The price ... cheap than other oils.. The cholestrol... Now days... No cholestroel in its. So why i'm worry about it.

Sometime.. my mom used this oil for massage.. natural
I use it for massage more than cooking. It melts right at body temp so it doesn't make a mess.
Coconut oil is great for cooking, and imparts a delicate flavour in many dishes, the downfall is its very high in colestrol
What the hell is colestrol?
it contains no unsaturated fat, high in vitamin e.plus, coconut oil will reduce the chances if you getting many types of diseases.try it,surely you won't regret it
Cholesterol only comes from animal matter, so anything that is plant in origin has no cholesterol (or minute trace amounts that are considered negligible). So your cooking oils all do not have cholesterol, unless you are using lard or other animal fats (including butter). Some manufacturers prominently highlight that their veggie/plant based oils have no cholesterol, but that is redundant info just to make it seem as if their oil is healthy than their competitors.

Coconut %26amp; palm oils are very high in saturated fats, and are thus not recommended for health reasons, contrary to the claims by palm/coconut oil producers who are trying to convince the world that their oil in fact improves health by pointing to certain communities who appear to have less heart diseases.

People in some developing countries may have some other factors to counteract the effects of their tropical oil consumption eg. more exercise through manual labour, simplier lifestyle, more fresh food %26amp; those in coastal regions eat more fresh fish, reliance on fresh herbs %26amp; spices instead of salt for flavouring.

This does not mean that coconut oil is thus healthy, simply because the majority of people elsewhere in cities %26amp; developed countries live more sedentary lives %26amp; hence already have higher risk of developing major diseases (no need to make things worse by taking coconut/palm oils).

Suggest to read info from the medical community which has plenty of undeniable facts concerning the composition of such oils eg. http://www.pritikin.com/askexperts/001.s鈥?/a>
Sure, my grandma uses it all the time, and her dishes are absolutely delicious and unique! Actually, most people in my country, Sri Lanka, use coconut oil for cooking.

Coconut oil contains good fats, the good saturated fats (yes, there ARE good saturated fats).

';People who live in tropical climates and who have a diet high in coconut oil are healthier, have less heart disease, cancer, colon problems and so on, than unsaturated fat eaters';.

Try it!
It's an acquired taste. Please don't buy refined coconut oil as it has no flavour at all. Only get virgin coconut oil. It's very good for frying and deep frying. It can also be added to soups and stews and goes great with green veggies.
